It's Week #8: Complementary Colors

Ok, this one’s a real eye opener. I really only learnt this properly last year for the first time. It’s a very powerful tool, and it’s quite simple.

See the color wheel?

Whoa, that’s bright. OK, now just take two opposite pieces of the pie, and there you have your complementary colors. Red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple, these color combinations simply go well with together, and well.. complement each other, so that the scene appears balanced, on a color-palette level, which is a really beautiful thing once you start opening your eyes to it.

Professional film color graders and classic painters all utilized this special color balance. This week, we’re going to ask you to keep an eye on the colors all around you and see if you can find (or arrange!) a scene that showcases some complementary colors, and demonstrates how well they pop!

Once you start keeping an eye out for them, you’ll begin to notice them everywhere!
