It's Week #19: Paper

Your challenge this week is to use the “prop” of a single white sheet of paper (preferably an 8.5×11″ piece of paper (US) or A4 (Europe)).

I saw a similar challenge in The Photographer’s Playbook, and was excited to incorporate this for one of our challenges this year. Don’t worry, we won’t make the rules as difficult as the one from the book (the book’s challenge was to take 36 different, unique photos, using only one sheet of paper and nothing else!)

You can come up with any scene you like, while incorporating the white sheet of paper in your scene. Perhaps a nice portrait, with your subject wearing a paper hat? Or a product photography shot of a paper airplane. You can crumple up the paper, fold it, tear it, whatever. The scene is entirely open to your interpretation, enjoy the process!

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  • Remember what you’ve learned so far. Think back on challenges like Lines, Lamp, or Details. How can you incorporate these ideas and techniques into your photo this week?
  • If you’re feeling really ambitious, try your hand at origami, kirigami, or paper cutting!
  • Paper roses can be really fun too, and they don’t die! Just keep them away from water…
  • Just because your paper is white, that doesn’t mean there can’t be color in your photograph! Like this fun photo here, or this one, or this one!
  • As always, think outside the box! Be original. Be funny. Be you!

Extra Credit: High Key

For some extra credit joojoo, try utilizing a “High-Key” technique in your photo! As we learned in Week 11: High Key, a high key photo is an image with a lot more white than black. This will usually give your photo a dreamy and happy look, but will be particularly challenging with a white sheet of paper as your subject! Take a look at that album for some inspiration.

Remember, it is not necessary to keep this Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting. It’s extra credit!

*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge, or the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit more than one photo!
