It's Week 9: Pattern!

Patterns are a fun thing to photograph. From macro to micro (wait, what’s the opposite of macro?), from abstract to journalistic, many times the photographer has a way of giving a certain perspective to the viewer that they otherwise wouldn’t ordinarily see.

Tips and Tuts:

  • BREAK the pattern! An abstract pattern is a cool thing to photograph (some of my favorites), but breaking the pattern will allow your subject to really pop and give it more interest. Check out this video for a nice example (start at the 1:31 mark).
  • Some pretty examples and helpful tips I found on the interwebs here, here, here, and here.
  • Get in close (macro) and “fill your frame” or shoot from above (sound familiar?) and make abstract patterns out of everyday scenes.
Make it your own, and check out the links below for more inspiration.

Extra Credit: Found in Nature

For some extra credit joojoo, find your patterns in nature. What better way to come across patterns than finding these beautiful designs as the universe intended it. There’s a whole world out there. Explore it!

Check out the Googles for some more inspiration.

Remember, it is not necessary to work in this Extra Credit piece. It’s extra credit!
