It's Week #18: Red

Many of you have requested a single color challenge. Two years ago we had a beautiful album for the color Red. I decided this year to do back-to-back color challenges. Red and Blue offer totally different mods and interpretation. Red is often considered to be a very emotionally intense color. Taking on many associations from different cultures: war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, love, and happiness.
In photography I find red to be the boldest color. It POPS out of a scene, especially amidst a ‘complementary environment’ or in a relatively desaturated scene. Be careful not to oversaturate your reds, as these will ‘clip’ easily.

 Tips and Tuts:

  • We now know that RED pairs well with GREEN. Consider using complementary colors in your shot.
  • In general, I find that our community frowns upon selective color. Perhaps it’s because it’s overdone, perhaps because it’s rarely done well. Either way, you can’t deny that the red selective color combo generally pops in a pleasing manner too interesting to deny. Go and have a go.. no pressure! 😉
  • Paint a scene. Well no, not literally, but what story are you trying to tell? What emotion are you invoking? Passion? Lust? Murder? Allow the color to help tell your story, as opposed to just having some ‘red’ in your photo.

 Extra Credit: Using Flash Gels!

For some extra credit joojoo, try your hand at using flash gels! It’s a great way to get that cool red tone in your photographs.

Remember, it is not necessary to work in this Extra Credit piece. It’s extra credit!
