It's Week #8: Religion

For many of us, there is a belief that there is a higher power watching over us. For others, there is the feeling of human connectedness, or some transcendent energy that unites us all. For sure there is variety in whatever one believes; it is estimated that there are over 4,200 religions in the world.

This week, your task is to capture a religion or capture what religion means to you. Religion can be a very powerful thing, and often can be seen conveyed in powerful imagery. Find an aspect of religion that has meaning, to you or to someone else, and capture the moment using your own unique voice.

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  • Think about what religion means to you. Is it something that is important in your life? Is it something that you observe in others? Do you find it to be a positive force or a negative force? Convey these ideas in your photograph.
  • Tell your story. Showcasing a sprawling church? Try going for an HDR shot (check out this tutorial to achieve that look). Or maybe try going for a low-key shot if your story is more an emotional one (check out the how-to here)
  • Maybe you want to define religion more liberally and include acts or groups that aren’t religious by definition. The photo is yours to make, and the story is yours to tell. Take on the challenge, connect to it in your own way, and come up with something beautiful and unique.

Extra Credit: Not Your Own

For some extra credit joojoo, capture a religion that you don’t follow! Visit a church, a synagogue; capture a practice of another religion! “Not your own” is really up to your definition, but I think the heart of the extra credit is to capture a scene that you would ordinarily have less access to. If your family belongs to a church that you don’t go to, photos of that church wouldn’t be a part of the “Extra Credit” exercise, eventhough it’s technically “not your religion”.
Go out of the box and capture a place where you wouldn’t ordinarily have easy access to. But remember, wherever you go, be respectful! Do some research beforehand to make sure you aren’t doing anything disrespectful by taking photos, and always get permission.

Check out The Googles for more inspiration!!

Remember, it is not necessary to keep this Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting. It’s extra credit!

*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge, or the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit more than one photo!
