It's Week #4: Shoot from Below

To be shot and submitted between Sunday, Jan 17 and Sunday, Jan 24 (noon, Eastern)

What are you committing to learning this week?

Quell the voices in your head that are trying to dictate what you can and cannot do. Or more importantly, the voices trying to dictate what you “could be doing better”.

There is no “better”. There is only what is, and embracing that reality with all the gratefulness your life-force can possibly contain. Dismiss the notion of perfection, and just go out and be creative.

Commit to learning something this week. Whatever that may be. All I ask is that you show up.

Lose the box.

  • Well, the obvious: change your perspective! The idea of the challenge is to shoot frombelow, but you can also opt to just shoot low, which is a great exercise in general. This is my default position whenever I shoot, and I find this generally yields a more creative composition than standing upright.
  • Be creative and think outside the box. What idea can you come up with that you think no one else would think of? Lauren’s take on the theme (from back in 2013), for example, totally shifts the way you perceive the challenge, and creates a very entertaining story. Have fun with it!

Looking for more inspiration? Check out our previous album, Shot from Below (2013) and Extreme Angle (2015). And of course, The Googles!

Extra Credit: Wide Angle (16mm or wider)

For some extra credit joojoo, slap on a wide angle lens, for a more unique perspective. I always find that for certain angles/subject matter, the wide angle gives me a photo with more punch. Borrow or rent a lens with a wide focal length and have some fun!

Check out the Googles for some inspiration.

Remember, it is not necessary to work in this Extra Credit piece. It’s extra credit!
