Week 42: Signs

Photo by: Ewa Kuc –  Week 2: Silhouette (2015)

No matter where you find yourself in the world, signs (and symbols) are constantly communicating with us. With just a glance we know if the parking is reserved for handicapped people, where you can find the nearest bathroom, to which faith a certain house of prayer is connected and who is wearing a really expensive pair of sunglasses.

Many signs are universal but others are very individual. Some of them are very unique to a specific location but others are too familiar and others are actually quite similar.

This week your challenge is to go out in your world and capture a local sign. Maybe they will be unique, or funny or require explanation. But just think, though, how awesomely this international album is going to communicate with the entire planet!.

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  • Don’t just take a photo of the sign itself, but zoom out and try to incorporate an interaction with the sign, for example, women queuing for the bathroom or this classic photo.
  • Your photo does NOT have to include a ‘real’ sign. It could be the bunch of balloons signaling the birthday party’s house, a little stone or a flower on a gravestone or a teenager rolling her eyes.
  • 40 outstanding examples of sign photography, travel photography signs and the winners of the World of Signage competition.
  • An article about the various types of signage to look out for during your photo shoot.
  • Tips for taking photos of neon signs.

Looking for more inspiration? Well, you are on your own baby because we NEVER had this challenge before!! But you can have a look at Pinterest, Instagram, and Flickr

And of course, the Googles! Oh, you sweet Googles.
