It's Week #42: Sound

On a technical level, sound is a vibration which goes through the air as an audible wave of pressure and displacement. On a more artistic level, sound is what we perceive it to be. It is a physical thing, but our perception of it is what makes it real to us. Think about when you walk past a window and see people inside laughing. You can’t hear them, but you know they are making sounds of joy.
This week, your challenge is to capture that perception. Show us the sounds that make your life what it is!

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  • Listen. As you go about your day, pay attention to the sounds around you, sounds that you would otherwise ignore. Listen to the ticking of the clock, the kettle boiling for you to make coffee, the water running as you brush your teeth, or the rush of a bus driving by you. How would you capture that so that the viewer can be immediately drawn in and “hear” the sound? Capture those little details, those tiny sounds that make up your day
  • What is the mood of the sound you’re capturing? Match your technique to the mood to emphasize it. Is it a happy sound? Try high key or HDR. Is it a melancholy sound? Try low key or black and white.

Extra Credit: “16mm or Wider”

For some extra credit joojoo, try shooting at 16mm or wider! A super wide shot is a great way to to get a unique perspective on your shot, and to show off a lot more than can fit in a standard frame. If you don’t have a wide-angle lens, definitely consider renting or borrowing one, they are super fun (I recommend this one)!

Check out the Googles for some more inspiration.

Remember, it is not necessary to keep this Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting. It’s extra credit!

*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge, or the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit more than one photo!
