For this week’s challenge, you need to think of a way to make your viewer STOP. To take pause, and think about the photo in front of them. There are many ways you can do this, but I’m going to make it easier by giving you a whole bunch of examples so you can be inspired to take on one of these ideas for yourself. If you find it easier, you can also take a more literal approach, and take a photo that illustrates the act of thinking.

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  • A different angle – what would an ordinary item look like from above? Or perhaps from a child’s point of view.
  • Abstract – Go deep, go wide, go fuzzy, nothing like an abstract to make the viewer think about what he or she is looking at.
  • Black & White or infrared – Changing or taking away the color in an image is an easy way to change the way reality normally looks to us. How can you use this to make a powerful image that will cause the viewer to think about it?
  • Physics – Because you are capturing a moment in time, at a specific angle, you have the luxury of altering the laws of physics in your shot. Go for a fast shutter and capture something flying or floating in mid-air. Play with perspective to make it appear someone is defying gravity, or wearing enormous shoes.
  • Use layer masks to make it appear someone is levitating.
  • Graffiti – How can you make graffiti interact with the real world to make an interesting composition?
  • Street photography can be a good way to capture a gritty shot that can give a viewer pause. Maybe the eyes of a person down on his luck, or an everyday act of kindness. Take your camera with you while you walk the streets and keep an eye out for something thought-provoking.
  • Optical Illusions – Just jump down the rabbit hole with this here link. See you in an hour.
