Week 16: Fast Shutter Speed!

Extra Challenge: Drip Water Photography
Pauline Brunt - Week 24: Fast Shutter Speed (2019)

It is sometimes mentioned that cameras still do not 'see' as well as the human eye, especially in a dynamic range situation. There is one thing that our cameras can do that the human eye cannot, though, and that is to freeze the action!

We capture a moment in time with every photo we take, but with a fast shutter speed that moment is extremely small. Often only a long as 1/4000th of a second.

As we are capturing motion with our fast shutter speeds, how about capturing some cool action such as drips, spills, breaks or spins? Any type of movement, however, can be suitable for fast shutter speed photography. Think also of birds in flight, people in motion, and ink in water photography.

Please note that if you are exposing your photo with ONLY flash, then that indeed is equivalent to a (very) fast shutter speed, and would qualify for this week's challenge. In general, the flash duration on most speedlights is between 1/400 at full power, and 1/20,000 at low power. So that's pretty fast!

Shooting with a mobile phone? Download an app where you can affect shutter speed manually, OR just shoot in mid-day sun, and your camera should freeze the action automatically. If you have a "sports mode" then try using that as well!

Tips and Tutorials

So how fast is fast? Well, it depends on the subject you are trying to catch! To freeze a hummingbird, for example, you have to be almost maxed out at something like 1/2000 or 1/4000 shutter speed. For slower moving objects you may be able to freeze the action with something like 1/500.

Generally a fast shutter speed will be 1/500 and up, with preference to the upper portions of your camera limits, like 1/2000, or 1/4000 etc..

Extra Challenge: Drip Water Photography

For some extra photography joo-joo, take a drip water photo with a fast shutter speed.
