Week 5: Shoot From Below!

Extra Challenge: 2+ Leading Lines
Photo Credit: Joana Durand-Gasselin - Week 49: Shoot from Below (2022)

Basic Facts: This week, you'll submit a photo you've taken yourself during the week of the challenge that is "from below,"
as in a different angle than you probably consider. Read the challenge information for more ideas!

This week let's Shoot From Below to see the world from a different angle – quite literally, from the ground up. Imagine capturing everyday scenes or extraordinary sights from a low vantage point, giving a unique change to the shots taken at your usual eye level.

One great idea for this challenge is to explore nature from a bug's-eye view. Imagine the intricate details of flowers, the towering majesty of trees, or the endless stretch of the sky as seen from below. You could experiment with capturing the vibrant colors and textures of petals or the play of light filtering through leaves.

Another cool approach could be photographing architecture or cityscapes. Shooting towering buildings from the ground can create a dramatic effect, emphasizing their grandeur or even making them seem like they're touching the sky. It's a fantastic way to add drama and depth to urban scenes.

Don't forget about people! Taking portraits from a low angle can be super interesting. Whether it's your friends, family, or strangers you meet on the street, shooting from below can add a sense of empowerment or even a touch of whimsy to your portraits by trying to give the photo a larger-than-life superhero-esque perspective.

Lastly, consider experimenting with abstract photography. Shooting everyday objects from below can transform them into something entirely new and unexpected. The play of light, shapes, and shadows can create captivating compositions that challenge the viewer's perception.

So, look at things from an all-new point of view and discover the beauty in often-overlooked angles.

Tips and Tutorials

TIPS:

  • Angles: Try various low positions to find the most compelling perspective.
  • Prep: Carry along a jacket, mat or a dropcloth that you can place on the ground and kneel / lie down on if the surface is dirty.
  • Mind the Background: Ensure the background complements your subject and isn't distracting. By going low, the sky can often work as a magnificient background canvas.
  • Use Leading Lines: Incorporate lines that guide the viewer's eye toward your subject for added depth.
  • Play with Depth of Field: Adjust aperture settings to emphasize your subject while blurring distractions.
  • Screen > Viewfinder: One of the few occasions when using your screen might be a better choice to use than your viewfinder. If you have a vari-angle screen, then make sure you use it to get the most out of your camera.
