Week 11: Egg!

Extra Challenge: Humor

Just the Facts:  You have 7 days to take a photo of an egg. 🥚🍳

A what now? Yes, egg. Why egg? Well, aside from it being a delicious staple, this bulbous treat is an excellent (edit: Shahrzaad is making me write “egg-cellent” here) medium for us to experiment (Shahrzaad, no!) with light.

Also, Susan told me that people were complaining that the challenges were getting too repetitive year to year. So, “what I eat”, “puddle”, “egg”, you did this to yourselves!!

Ok, back to photography –I dare say there is no better educational tool of how to really see and understand the characteristics of light on a subject, than the humble egg.

We’ll often hear how light “wraps” around a subject, but what does that even mean? Well, bring your spheroidal friend into a dark room and illuminate your subject with a flash, lamp, whatever, and you’ll quickly see how the falloff of the light changes depending on the characteristics of the light.

If you shoot with a “soft light”, you will see a long falloff, or gradient, of light to shadow. Shooting with a “hard light” will yield are more abrupt transition from the light to the shadow.

This is the time to egg-speriment. To get creative. To think out of the box carton.

Of course, you don’t have to shoot in a studio environment but it is a great opportunity to do so.

Don’t forget to “pin” any BTS (behind the scenes) photos you may have as a comment under your photo, as it’s a huge help for others to learn!

Tips and Tutorials

TIPS:

  • Cracked Creativity: Capture a broken egg with dynamic compositions or mid-air yolk splashes.
  • Minimalist Approach: A single egg on a plain background can make a striking composition.
  • Macro Details: Get close to highlight textures, pores, or reflections on the eggshell.
  • Egg in Motion: Experiment with rolling eggs, spinning, or mid-drop shots for dynamic energy.
  • Nestled Composition: Place eggs in a nest, basket, or textured surface for a cozy, organic feel.
  • High Contrast Drama: Use a black background with a single light source for a moody effect.
  • Egg Reflection: Photograph eggs on a reflective surface for a surreal, artistic touch.
  • Colored & Dyed: Experiment with painted or dyed eggs to add vibrant pops of color.
  • Egg and Hands: Capture hands holding or cracking an egg for a storytelling element.
  • Cooking in Action: Show eggs being whisked, fried, or poached to bring life into the shot.

Extra Challenge: Humor

Think the Main Challenge alone ain't worthy enough of your photog skillz? Sweet - try adding the EXTRA challenge along with the Main Challenge to showcase your abilities.

This week, we'd like to see Egg photos with some Humor included.

Do remember, the EC is neither mandatory nor does it enhance your odds of being picked for any 52F honors. It's just an EXTRA challenge for you, if that's something you want to take on in addition to the Main Challenge. We intentionally design the Extra Challenge to be difficult for most, so only take this on if you are looking for an EXTRA challenge. Get it? It's extra. 💖
