Just the Facts:  You have 7 days to take a photo portraying a “mood”.

Feeling down? Feeling up? Somewhere in the middle? This week is all about capturing a feeling. There are many techniques we can use to convey certain feelings, like bluish tones for melancholy and bright orange tones for joy.

There’s also lens choices. Notice how when shooting wide and from above, you can convey a sense of loneliness. Shooting from below can give a larger-than-life superhero look.

Finally there’s body pose and context. Hands raised in the air on a mountaintop? That will convey a certain feeling as opposed to someone curled up into a ball in the corner of a room.

This is a great opportunity to really think about lens choice, angle, lighting, model pose, and color to convey the story that you are trying to tell!

If you want to simplify, I’d just focus on model pose and lens choice (or how close or far you want to capture the scene).

Don’t forget to “pin” any BTS (behind the scenes) photos you may have as a comment under your photo, as it’s a huge help for others to learn!

Tips and Tutorials

TIPS:

  • Lighting Sets The Mood: Soft light feels calm; harsh light adds drama. Warm tones evoke joy, cool tones suggest sadness.
  • Be Expressive: Body language and facial expressions tell emotional stories without words.
  • Color Psychology: Warm tones (yellow, red) feel happy; cool tones (blue, gray) suggest sadness or calm.
  • Contrast For Emotion: Juxtapose light and dark, movement and stillness, or solitude and crowds to enhance mood.
  • Blur & Motion: Slow shutter speeds create dreamlike, chaotic, or eerie moods, adding emotional depth.
  • Minimalism For Impact: A lone subject emphasizes solitude; a vibrant scene radiates energy and joy.

Extra Challenge: CTB

Think the Main Challenge alone ain't worthy enough of your photog skillz? Sweet - try adding the EXTRA challenge along with the Main Challenge to showcase your abilities.

This week, we'd like to see photos depicting Mood taken with a CTB (Color Tone Blue) gel included.

Do remember, the EC is neither mandatory nor does it enhance your odds of being picked for any 52F honors. It's just an EXTRA challenge for you, if that's something you want to take on in addition to the Main Challenge. We intentionally design the Extra Challenge to be difficult for most, so only take this on if you are looking for an EXTRA challenge. Get it? It's extra. 💖

Remember, you are only submitting ONE photo per week. It is not necessary (and sometimes not possible) to work in this Extra Challenge into your submission. It’s extra challenge!
