Week 2: Blue

Photo by: Nita Rice – Week 19: Blue (2016)

The theme this week, creative Frames, is “Blue”. And just to inform all our newcomers, you are ENCOURAGED to interpret this theme any way you want. You can make it about the color blue, about feeling blue, the blue hour, blues music or anything else you can think of. There are no rules* about what is right or wrong in your art.

If you choose to photograph blue as a color, remember that blue is considered a cool color. Cool colors usually invoke feelings of tranquility, quietness, calm, confidence and faith.  But blue can also be aloof and snobbish. Whatever interpretation you shoot, keep in mind that the viewer will engage so much more with your photo if you can convey an emotion in your photo.

*A quick reminder:
There ARE however three rules here at 52Frames that we are quite strict about:
1. You have to take the photo YOURSELF.
2. The photo HAS to be taken during the week of the challenge.
3. You have to be polite towards your fellow photographers.

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  1. Life in the color blue from the National Geographic.
  2. Blue photos on Pinterest and amazing blue iPhone photos.
  3. Introduction to the blue hour and more tips on how to shoot better blue hours photos.
  4. 10 tips for emotive blue hour portraits.
  5. How to make colors pop in Photoshop and in Lightroom.
  6. How to create powerful photos with color.

Have a look at the “Blue” album of 2016 and the “Blue hour” album of 2017 . And of course, the Googles. Oh, you sweet Googles.

Extra Credit: Complementary colors

Your photos will stand out even more when you play with complementary colors. Orange, by the way is the complementary color of blue. This color combination is so effective that you see it basically everywhere.

Remember, it is not necessary to keep this
Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting.
It’s extra credit!
*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per
week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can
include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge or
the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit
more than one photo!
