Week 5: Neglected

Photo by: Vicki Goldsmith. – Week 48: Abandoned (2015)

Welcome to our first real “story” challenge this year. Your challenge this week is to create an emotional connection with your photo so take your time and think about how you are going to do this.

Consider how your viewers would interpret the visual clues in your photo to understand the story in your photo. A photo of a darkly lit room with a bloodstain on the floor does not create the same story as the photo of a smiling child running in the park during the golden hour.

Photographers have various storytelling tools, so decide how you are going to use them for this challenge. Are your photos going to be in black and white or color? Should the textures in your photo be smooth or rough? How are you using the light to create a sense of neglect? What is the background like? Are your models smiling or sad? Does your angle add anything to the story?

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  1. Visual storytelling tips from a photographer.
  2. Three types of stories in photography, storytelling in street photography and tips for telling stories with your photos.
  3. Go on an urbex (Urban Exploration) adventure, where you find old and neglected buildings and explore and photograph them. Just please take the necessary safety precautions!
  4. How to shoot models in an abandoned building.
  5. The art of abandonment and urban decay.
  6. Neglected Utopia: the forgotten modernist estates of Paris

Need more inspiration? Have a look at the “Abandoned” albums of 2015 and 2017.   the “Old” album of 2013 and the “Wabi Sabi” albums of 20172016 and 2015.  And of course, the Googles. Oh, you sweet Googles.

Extra Credit: HDR

For some extra credit joojoo, try creating an HDR (high dynamic range) photo. You can find some tips and tutorials here and here and watch Yosef’s video on making HDR photos look more natural.

Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting.
It’s extra credit!

*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per
week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can
include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge,
or the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit
