Week 4: Something New

52Frames is all about exploring your creativity, stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing imperfection. Without making mistakes HOW are we going to learn? So the theme this week, creative Framers, is “Something new”.

This ‘new thing” can be anything that you have not tried yet. If can be a new photographic technique, shooting in a different type of photographic genre or exploring your camera’s capabilities. Maybe try shooting in manual mode this week, or in RAW. Or figure out how the back button focus works or maybe play with double/triple exposures.

Your ‘something new’ can also be something new in a non-photographic way. A new baby, a new home or a new tattoo! It can be a new experience or activity like bungee jumping, or finally trying that Asian-fusion place down the block.

We really want to encourage you to be brave this week and choose something that may seem ‘difficult’ at first. If this challenge is too easy for you, you are doing it wrong. Maybe your photo won’t be perfect but it is waaay more important that you try something new and nudge your comfort zone a little bit wider. You’ll thank us in the end.

Tips and Tuts for this week:

  1. Ask yourself if there’s something you’ve been meaning to do/try, but never have. This could be the perfect week to take that jump.
  2. How to shoot in manual mode – the basics. Courtney Slazinik has a great, clean, blog website with a focus on moms. Check out her breakdown on how to shoot manual.
  3. 10 Reasons why you should try shooting in RAW. (Get Yosef’s video “How to Edit Raw” when you become a $1 patron)
  4. Back button focus explained.
  5. A comprehensive list of 50 photography techniques and photo tutorials.
  6. Different types of photographic styles and 15 different types of genres.
  7. Bungee jumping.

Remember, it is not necessary to keep this
Extra Credit challenge in mind while shooting.
It’s extra credit!

*Please note!! You can only submit ONE photo per
week, for the week’s challenge. This photo can
include the “Extra Credit” part of the challenge,
or the “regular” challenge, but you can never submit
more than one photo!
