“ Another trip around the sun ”
I decided to do a self-portrait for 3 reasons - 1) it's my birthday tomorrow and thought it was appropriate 2) I couldn't find anyone to sit for me and 3) I need to the practice posing people. This is like my gazillion photo and I don’t look too happy but I’m happy ?. I used one speedlight with ...

First, Happy Birthday Tami. We are gifted with just a certain number of birthdays, and shouldn't take any for granted. I'm glad you celebrated it the way you did--a self-portrait. I think you were just self-indulgent enough to put yourself out there as you'd like others to see you: independent, self-reliant, a kind of sexy-sweet but tempered with "don't mess with me" toughness. Stating that in your portrait was what you were happy about, maybe?
Second, this picture is spectacular in my opinion, given what I inferred from my previously stated assessment. It's a portrait shaped by the persona of the subject (Arnold Newman style; IMHO the greatest portrait photographer who ever lived. It just happens in this case that the subject and photographer are the same person.)
Third, I think you were technically very astute with a lighting solution that was simple, elegant, and looked like your golden moment. Bravo!

I like it. The light is perfect and although I'm sure you've done it a thousand times,  you look natural.
