I've captured some shots of a redwing black bird in this very spot before. When I visited again for this challenge they were there again, along with this mallard pair. It was like seeing old friends.
I was shooting with a new long lens, which takes more skill to shoot handheld than I ...

Lovely lighting. The green head of the mallard just pops! I can't do my long lens hand held anymore. A monopod and the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head has been my lifesaver. Especially the monogimbal. You might want to check it out.

Nice! I hear you - I have the same long lens but generally go out with my 70-300 kit lens (on a crop sensor) because it is so much easier to manage.
