“ The Salt and Pepper turrets ”
I had trouble coming up with a photo this week. So much so that I wrote my poem before the photo, a first for me! But then my friend and fellow framer Jon Balgley came to the rescue. He is in the Boston area visiting his family. We went on a photo shoot on a gorgeous late summer day along the ...

The poem. This week written before the photo!        beautiful view

The impermanence of a beautiful view

Up front, beauty is a face I cannot touch -
    Perfection
Precise, the incisive contours of the day
    Under a light that reveals
All without giving us permission to understand

What is beyond, decomposes in stages:
While the summer exhausts her sun
    In gusts of invading heat,
    The winter crystallizes time,
Freezes life in a moment that seems eternal
Yet it melts with the very first thaw.

Then Spring blooms and wilts in an uncontrollable dance
    The soft fall of petals
Is the silent shout of the cosmos,
Reminding us that even the most beautiful is impermanent.

    Like the body,
Like the self that observes and dreams
    In this ever changing landscape.

    The cosmos, indifferent,
Turns on its axis in a never ending cycle
Each burning star is just a dot of light
    Oblivious to the seasons,
Not minding what is in front, nor what is left there far behind.

I am but a leaf tossed around in this cosmic temporal wind
Quivering at the far reaches of my very own existence,
    Absorbing the ever metamorphic
    Evanescing beautiful view.
What I see in the foreground is what I am,
What is there…beyond is what I cannot reach,
    I shall never touch
Even if it is my wish, my dream or what once I called mine.

I am but a sigh in the transition between stages
    Between what is born
    And what inevitably dies,
    Leaving behind that cosmic echo,
    There, beyond there
    Where even time cannot touch.

So see to appreciate beauty start here,
Always here but possibly also there!
    Look! Don’t give up
As the beautiful view is always there!
