This is taken over a bridge, with both sides leading to the door of the church. Also taken at a time of day where the shadow from the side of the bridge leads you directly accross the centre of the bridge to the door of the church.

I understand your conundrum re landscape or portrait, having chosen landscape, it may have been better to crop more from the top of the church - perhaps at the horizontal line in the large window? I think black and white works well for this image.
