“ Bird House ”

Unremarkably, I turned to the birds when my daughters left for college. They, along with ancient Lao dogs, are my constant companions in all seasons. We’ve had snow, oddly, all month. The bird feeders are full and the girls seem content.

I love my bird feeders too. Did you know that we have year-round hummingbirds here in Washington state? Feeding them in the winter is a special challenge because you've got to make sure that there is warm nectar available at sunrise because the birds are territorial and need to almost immediately feed upon waking up from their overnight torpor state.

Fortunately, the nectar doesn't begin to freeze until 29'F and it's rare that I have to bring them inside overnight and set an alarm to get them out before my birds wake up
