First, I love this photo. It really caught my attention. That said, I had no idea those boots were resting on a truck but it really doesn’t matter. The colors look like the boots are on the earth and the the sky just before dawn is behind them. It’s a great effect. The only thing that bothers me is that little bit of beige triangle on the left. It’s distracting and draws the eye away from the boots. You could color it in Photoshop to match the truck. Overall, great job!

Dan, did you place the boots there or find them? That maybe should be irrelevant to the power of the image, but to me it would gain strength from being discovered. I love the combination of snow and desiccated plant material on the boots, and the different angles at which the boots are lying. The palette works really well too. My only hesitation is that even if it was a discovery, it's so beautifully poised and shot that it looks like an arrangement. Maybe a slightly less centered shot, or a less tight one, with a wee bit more naturally untidy context, would help with that? I understand if that's not your concern! The storytelling is great.
